Certification Requirements

In order to become employed as a Phlebotomist in the State of California, you must be certified through the California Department of Public Health Laboratory Field Services Division.

As of April 9, 2003, all persons performing phlebotomy who are not California licenses physicians, nurses, or clinical lab scientists, must be certified as a phlebotomist before they can draw blood.

The State of California certification requirements are as follows:

  • Must be a high school graduate or have a GED (proof of higher education may be provided in lieu of high school graduation)
  • Must complete 40 hours of phlebotomy training from school that has been approved by the Laboratory Field Services
  • Must complete a minimum of 40 hours of phlebotomy practice that includes at least 50 venipunctures and 10 skin punctures
  • Must pass a State of California approved phlebotomy certification examination
  • Must apply for certification and pay the application fee of $100

The Clinical Training Institute (CTI) is a training division of Academy Education Services (AES). CTI’s Phlebotomy Technician Certification program is approved by the California Department of Public Health Laboratory Field Services.

The program requirements include: 10 skin punctures, 50 venipunctures, 40 hours of clinical training at an LFS-approved lab, and 60 hours of didactic training.

Upon completing the program, students receive a certificate and will then be eligible to take the national certification exam given by the American Medical Technologists (AMT). The AMT testing fee is $83.

Once the certification exam is passed, the student must apply to the State of California for certification. The state application fee is $100

Liberty Career College is approved by the State Of California Department Of Public Health Laboratory Field Services. They are affiliated with most hospitals in Kern County.

In addition to having a high school diploma or GED, you must also have completed a previous vocational program or have a minimum of 20 college units in the last 2 years. An Associates or Bachelor’s degree is also acceptable regardless of when it was obtained.

They encourage students to have more than one job skill to make themselves more diverse when applying for jobs. They offer a significant discount to the Phlebotomy training program when you also register for the Medical Assisting program.
