The University of Alaska Fairbanks’ accredited one-year Phlebotomy certification program prepares students for entry-level positions as phlebotomy technicians.

Students who graduate from this program will meet requirements to take the national certification examination for Phlebotomy Technician (PBT) by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP).  National certification is not required to apply for jobs, but it is highly recommended.

The first half of the program covers collection and handling of blood by venipuncture and dermal puncture.  Students are expected to draw blood from fellow students and also volunteer to have blood drawn by other students.

In the second half of the course, students are assigned to a lab facility in Fairbanks that includes 8 hours of introductory classroom work and 100 hours of supervised practice on patients.
